CREATING A BETTER FUTURE, SINCE 1973
BTW’s proud history and passion for bringing professional services to Aotearoa, New Zealand, began 50 years ago. In 1973 business partners and surveyors, Buxton, Tuder and Waugh, began their operations with hydrographic and land surveying services in Australia, and then in New Zealand in 1974.
Managing Director, Grant Aitken says, “There is a lot for us to celebrate at this 50-year milestone. Our success is down to our people – past, present, and future. At the outset, the majority of BTW’s work was in the energy sector, with land and hydrographic surveying, and navigation software solutions.
Today, under the BTW name, we are a multidisciplinary company with surveyors, civil, structural, and geotechnical engineers, planners, UAV pilots, environmental scientists, 3D geospatial specialists, BIM and GIS experts working across a broad range of sectors. We’re working throughout Aotearoa, with offices here in Ngāmotu – New Plymouth, Kirikiriroa – Hamilton, Whāingaroa – Raglan and Taupō.”
Kathryn Barrett, Cadastral Survey Team Leader and Associate, joined BTW in 2001 immediately after graduating. Having carried out work experience at BTW during her studies, Kathryn was able to gain an appreciation for all that was on offer at BTW. Coming on board full-time, and staying with the business since, was a no brainer.
“A collaborative approach, diverse range of skillsets and the knowledge we provide for our clients every day is something I’m proud of. I’ve seen BTW grow from approximately 20 staff when I first started, to more than 90 FTEs, and believe that with growth and diversity, comes opportunities for individuals and the collective.”
This is supported by others leading the way at BTW.
Cam Twigley, Pou Taiao, Director and Principal Planner has practiced planning for 25 plus years (17 with BTW) and witnessed how BTW’s commitment to clients and community is unwavering. Having developed relationships with clients, tangata whenua, community groups, consultants, councils, schools, universities, and individuals, BTW has been instrumental in the development of significant projects across the motu.
“We have a strong team of professionals, and a strategy that supports the delivery of creative and sustainable solutions. BTW’s long-term relationships are built on good communication, integrity, trust and consistent high quality service delivery.”
Mathew Dickey, Kaitohu Mataaro Metarahi, Director and Principal Civil/Waters Engineer, puts BTW’s growth and resilience as a company down to a focus on innovation and impact.
“Our staff are driven to create a better future by focusing our collective efforts on the right projects, in the right areas. The further reaching our services and support are, the greater the impact we have – for our clients, but also for our community, the environment, and for our own people.”
Having been part of the BTW team since a young age (from high-school labourer, to Engineering graduate and beyond), Mathew has seen how the landscape for BTW has changed and the service offering has met the challenges of the day.
“At BTW, delivering smart solutions safely and responsibly comes from an ongoing commitment to learning, continuous improvement and investment in leading-edge technology. With intelligent application of the technology and systems integration, great things happen.”
Grant adds, “We are passionate about our work and life away from it. We connect with our communities and clients, not only on the job, but also in the environments where we live and play. Balance is key to how we do business at BTW, along with focusing on our purpose of creating a better future.”
