Kaitiakitanga and a commitment to environmental best practice and efficiency are at the core of our sustainable business. As a category winner, BTW are leaders in ecological restoration – showing outstanding leadership within the business community towards pest control efforts and innovation on Taranaki Maunga. We demonstrate how innovation and a team approach is rewarded by staff wellbeing and environmental conservation.
The Taranaki Regional Council Awards program read: BTW Company and its staff are putting their time and expertise into iconic conservation projects in Taranaki and further afield. As part of BTW’s health and wellness programme, staff volunteer for The Mounga Project, regularly checking and clearing a five-kilometre line of 57 stoat traps high on Mount Taranaki. Now into the third year, their efforts and traps protect an area where Taranaki Kiwi Trust has already released 18 Kiwi. Alongside this work, The Mounga Project’s Kākā release programme will benefit from a BTW designed mobile kitset aviary. Erected at release sites, the aviary lets the birds acclimatise to their new surroundings before flying into the wild. It’s currently in use at Abel Tasman National Park.
Grant Aitken, Managing Director accepted the award for BTW, and commented that “it’s not hard to lead when you have a team that are passionate about the environment, their professions and the whenua beneath their feet. We let our mahi speak for itself”.
It is great to celebrate this acknowledgment and the efforts of other organisations and individuals who are making important contributions to our region. David MacLeod, Taranaki Regional Council Chairman noted that all of the 17 award winners show a Taranaki can-do attitude and highlight the innovation and practical environmentalism that’s a strong part of the regional culture.
