Foundation
Design
The old adage that all good things start with a solid foundation rings true in all forms of construction
We place the utmost importance on foundation design as the building’s superstructure will rely on the foundation and substructure to support it for many years to come.
Our Structural engineers assess your site and your plans to determine a foundation design that is fitting for your specific project.
How does the foundation design process work?
The process we follow for our foundation design services is similar to that of our Structural Design services, but places great emphasis on soil analysis.
BTW Civil engineers will carry out an extensive soil analysis and testing to determine the quality and consistency of the soil the foundation will sit on. We assess how the soil will deal with the foundation load, how consistent it is across the site, and if there are any other issues that need attention such as slope stability.
The soil analysis findings influence our foundation design for the project, in terms of recommended foundation type, materials used and any special considerations to be made during the construction stage.
Our Structural engineers will then design a suitable foundation. A structural design draftsperson completes our foundation design using Revit or AutoCAD software, and relays this to our client. The foundation design can then be utilised when applying for building consent, and by the project’s construction team as well as any third-party suppliers.
What are the objectives of foundation design?
Our structural engineering team completes foundation design work to:
- Identify soil bearing capacity and soil type where the foundation will sit
- Produce a technically informed foundation design that is valuable to our clients
- Ensure that the foundation will support the superstructure in all elements
- Ensure a safe building that maintains good longevity
